Facebook the web’s most visited site?

Has Facebook finally overtaken Google? The quick answer, according to a Hitwise blog post this week, is sorta.

After sneaking to the top of the internet food chain on a handful of recent holidays and one weekend earlier this month, Facebook finally claimed a week at the top. The week ending March 13, 2010 had Facebook as the most visited site online.

Whether or not the trend continues will be something to watch. Another trend, according to Fortune Brainstorm Tech blogger Jessi Hempel, is the overall behavior of web users. (more…)

TP: Bit.ly long on upside

What started as a online convenience has become a big business — URL shortening. And like so many web-based tools and applications, the balance of power has shifted. Where TinyURL may have ruled the web for much of the decade, our top pick — bit.ly — is now the top dog for good reason.

Even before Twitter made bit.ly its default url shortener last May, dumping TinyURL, the new kid on the block was making waves. Bit.ly stood out from a sea of competitors for one reason, and it is a big one — built-in analytics. (more…)

TP: Lynda.com worth the investment

So maybe Santa brought you a new laptop. Or your New Year’s resolution has you focused on some new media training. Or all this free time with your vacationing tween-ager has you unable to talk the talk, so to speak. Do not fear. I introduce lynda.com.

Lynda.com is a subscription-based web site featuring video tutorials covering a wide variety of programs, applications and tools. I was first introduced to the site by multimedia guru Jane Stevens. Knowing I was starving for more digital media knowledge, Stevens suggested I take a look at the site. That was probably five years ago. I have been hooked ever since. (more…)

First up, free blog hosting. After years of playing with both Blogger and WordPress, one has emerged as the leader in the clubhouse — WordPress. I know, I know.
