Digital Media Training Available

If you are in San Diego and interested in a digital media program that will give you practical, hands-on training at an affordable price, San Diego State has a program for you.

We are embarking on our second semester of the Digital Media Certificate Program in the College of Extended Studies. The class size is small (15ish for lab classes, 25 for larger lecture-based classes) and the content diverse. Most of the students are mid-career professionals with some sort of media background, either hoping to enhance skills they have or gain new ones. Best of all, you have the opportunity to not only gain knowledge, but create content for what could  be the start of a nice portfolio. (more…)

TP: We Like Twitter. Really.

I know. I’m going out on a limb, aren’t I? But in all honesty, Twitter really has so much upside, there’s hardly a reason to not buy in.

The site  legitimized itself in 2009 as a valuable (and for some, vital) web tool when it served as the lone provider of news and information after the Iran elections. With top trends ranging from the presidential elections to the swine flu to Michael Jackson, Twitter seemed to have its finger on the pulse of the world (to view Twitter’s own analysis of its top trends, click here).

Twitter can be just as effective a tool on a small scale, especially for individuals, small businesses and non-profits striving to establish a presence online (visit our Twitter feed). It is quick and easy, and more sites are allowing for the integration of tweets as content, either through site-specific applications or rss feeds. This is huge from a time-management standpoint (more on this in a future blog). (more…)

Talking Social Media on “These Days”

It’s impossible to think a conversation about social media in the last decade could be mashed into about 30 minutes. But yesterday, we gave it a good college try.

Along with Nate Ridder, a “web chef” based in San Diego, I was invited to talk about social media on the KPBS talk show “These Days.” Among the highlights was a spirited disagreement on the future of MySpace — I was the hopeful optimist — and an interesting lesson the history of social media.  (I admit, I was not familiar with The Well, so hearing about it was really enlightening.)
